Banzhang Character
Crafted from ancient-tree leaves sourced from the Banzhang tea region, this raw Pu-erh expresses the bold strength, depth, and lasting sweetness for which Banzhang tea is renowned.

Appearance
The cake is round, evenly proportioned, and moderately compressed, with a clearly defined central indentation. Thick tea strands, intact buds and leaves, and abundant silvery tips are visible across its rich green-brown surface.

Aroma & Tea Liquor
Once brewed, the tea produces a clear, bright golden liquor with a rich and substantial texture. The early infusions open with delicate floral and orchid aromas, followed by fuller notes of honey, subtle caramel, fresh botanicals, and tender leaf fragrance.

Taste & Finish

In 2025, Fung Tea proudly introduced “1983”, named after the year its founder began his tea-making journey. It commemorates the origins of over forty years of craftsmanship, honors the original dedication to tea making, and carries forward the traditions of the craft.

Menghai’s Hidden Mountains Nurture Distinctive Character

The Spirit of Banzhang Shapes a Legend

Menghai County in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, is known as the birthplace of Pu-erh tea. Fung Tea is rooted in this region, with its primary tea-making facility located in Banpen Old Village at the heart of Banzhang.

From here, we source ancient-tree leaves across the greater Banzhang area, including Lao Banzhang and Xin Banzhang.

At an average elevation of 1,850 metres, the region’s year-round mist, abundant rainfall, fertile soil, wide temperature variations, and strong high-altitude sunlight create exceptional growing conditions. Together, these natural elements make Banzhang one of China’s largest and most diverse ancient-tree tea regions.

“1983” is crafted from carefully selected first-spring leaves gathered from ancient tea trees. Every leaf reflects the difficulty and care behind the harvest.

Experienced tea pickers journey deep into the pristine mountain forests and climb the ancient tea trees to gather the leaves by hand. With skilled hands and a gentle touch, they carefully select plump, tender buds while avoiding mechanical damage, preserving the leaves’ natural freshness and authentic character.

After resting throughout the winter, first-spring leaves accumulate abundant nutrients. This provides the foundation for the tea’s rich texture, concentrated flavor, and long-lasting fragrance.

Traditional Rolling & Sun-Drying Preserve an Enduring Character

Drawing on 40 years of tea-making experience, first-spring ancient-tree leaves from the Banzhang tea region are carefully processed using traditional hand rolling and sun-drying techniques.

The leaves are thoughtfully blended to unite the natural character bestowed by the mountains with the skill and dedication of the tea maker.

The result is the classic “1983” Raw Pu-erh Tea Cake, distinguished by its well-formed and substantial shape, distinctive flavor, rich natural compounds, and the refined craftsmanship behind every detail.

Silvery Tips & Deep Luster Define the Dry Leaves

The Commanding Character of Banzhang Revealed

The dry leaves are long, bold, and well formed, with a strong structure shaped by time. Fine silvery hairs cover the buds like frost resting on branches, catching the natural light with a delicate sheen.

Their deep, glossy color appears fresh and richly nourished, as though touched by morning dew. Each leaf carries the influence of high mountain mist and the vitality of ancient tea trees, revealing the unmistakable strength and noble character of Banzhang before the first sip is even taken.

Boiling Water Reveals an Amber Glow

Each Infusion Unfolds the Tea’s True Character

To brew “1983” Banzhang Raw Pu-erh Tea, use water heated to 95-100°C with a gaiwan or Yixing teapot. Add approximately 5-8g of tea.

Pour the water slowly along the inner wall of the vessel. Rinse the leaves for about 5 seconds, then pour immediately. For later infusions, gradually extend the steeping time by 3 to 5 seconds according to taste.

As the leaves begin to open, the clear golden liquor flows into the cup with an amber-like glow, beginning an experience that is as visually captivating as it is flavorful.
