Meilan Zhuju 梅蘭竹菊 | Huazhu Liangzi · Raw Pu-erh Dragon Pearls
Huazhu Liangzi Ancient-Tree Character
Crafted from ancient-tree tea leaves sourced from Huazhu Liangzi in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, this raw Pu-erh combines the substantial depth of old-tree material with the freshness and clarity of young spring tea. Rather than being pressed into a traditional cake, the leaves are carefully formed into individual Dragon Pearls, preserving a lively expression of the tea with fresh botanical fragrance, elegant orchid, honeyed sweetness, and a long returning finish.
Created as part of Fung Tea’s Master Collaboration Series, “Meilan Zhuju” draws inspiration from 梅、蘭、竹、菊 — plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum, traditionally known as the Four Gentlemen in Chinese art. Officially authorized artwork by Chinese painting master Chen Yongqiang brings these four subjects into the presentation, uniting traditional tea craftsmanship with classical Chinese artistic expression.
Appearance
Each Dragon Pearl is evenly rounded and tightly formed, with a smooth, compact structure. The leaves display a glossy dark brown tone interwoven with clearly visible silvery tips, reflecting the combination of mature ancient-tree leaf material and tender buds. The individually formed pearls gradually unfurl during brewing, revealing the intact character of the leaves within.
Aroma & Tea Liquor
Once brewed, the tea produces a clear, bright golden liquor. The aromatic profile opens with a fresh botanical character, followed by elegant orchid and other floral notes. Honeyed sweetness becomes increasingly apparent as the tea develops, while a clean, naturally sweet fragrance remains throughout the session.
The overall aroma is lifted and refined, with orchid and honey forming the central thread from the early infusions through the finish.
Taste & Finish
The liquor is full-bodied yet fresh and lively, combining the depth of ancient-tree material with the brightness of young spring leaves. The opening is clean and naturally sweet, followed by a fresh, succulent character and a smooth, moist texture across the palate.
Returning sweetness develops quickly and persists through the later infusions, accompanied by steady salivation and a noticeable throat-moistening sensation. The finish remains clean, sweet, and refreshing, with lingering orchid, honey, and fresh botanical notes.
